The British public are changing their ways - well, more and more people are leaving holiday bookings to the last minute! Anyhow that is our experience! The web site traffic this month has exploded - we have served over 135,000 pages this month! 40,000 page increase over last month. We are getting over a 1000 visitors a day. Now, we have had to upgrade our web server to cope with the demand. For those who are interested we use 2 web servers one for our static pages on http://www.gites-in-france.co.uk but our property / rental database is hosted on an IBM Lotus Domino server in the States. Unfortunately, some of you have reported that our web database was not working! In fact, you have a bookmark to our old IBM Lotus server - so please update your Bookmark to the new server! Our new server guarantees 99.9% up time - we shall see! Of course, the good news for the owners advertising on our site is the demand for rentals. Our featured sites really do work. We had one delighted owner tell us they fully booked through to September. Our web logs show for July that Featured sites outnumbered Classified Adverts by 2:1 even though there are more classified adverts. The public does like to see a photograph!! Thought you might like to hear about our recent experiences regarding
taking our dog on holiday to France. Taking advice from our local vet, we had our dog inoculated for Rabies. A blood text followed one month later, which proved to be positive. All of this needed to be carried out 6 months before our holiday. Off to France we go! Whilst on holiday, we made contact with a local vet in the town of Gueret, in the Limousin region. Arrangements were made for Ollie to be treated the day before returning to England. This was carried out, and we paid the fees, 45 Euros. On reporting to the "Pets terminal" at the Channel Tunnel, we presented our forms etc, expecting everything to be fine. We were then informed that the written evidence provided to us by the vet was insufficient, and that the official certificate should have been used. We were not the first to be informed of this that day! We were then directed to a local vet in Calais, where we had to pay a further 30 Euros. This was then presented to the staff in the Pets Terminal. Although the staff in the terminal were very helpful and friendly, we felt a bit let down by the local vets in not providing us with the correct certificate. A number of important lessons have been learnt from our experiences, they are as follows: 1) At no time were we ever given the impression that Ticks could be a problem, after a couple of days, we were extracting them at the rate of about a dozen a day! This could have been avoided by us treating him in advance. 2) Make sure that the official certificate provided by the "ministere de L'Agriculture et de la Peche" is given to you when having the treatment carried out, otherwise you will not be given the ok to return with your pet. A list of vets local to where you will be staying is available from the Ministere. These are early days and I am quite sure that once these small problems are ironed out, taking your dog abroad will NOT be a major event. Hope this has been of some help.
